DC Doesn’t Work Without Child Care
This video was two weeks prior to the District of Columbia City Council’s vote on the city budget. At the time, Mayor Fentys proposed budget for 2011 included a $4 million cut to the city’s subsidized child-care program. This was in addition to the $4 million cut to the 2010 budget. As a result child-care centers, which are also local businesses owned and staffed mostly by women, will close. Study after study has shown that children enrolled in quality child care programs are better prepared for school, more likely to graduate from high school, stay out of jail and go to college. Subsidized childcare for low-wage and/or low-income parents pays for itself. At the time of this posting, some, but not all of the funding for subsidized childcare is due to be restored.
